Scope Rings & Mounts: The Cheapest Part That Ruins the Most Zeroes

Shooters blame scopes for wandering zeroes and send back perfectly good glass. Most of the time, the $30 part between the scope and the rifle did it.

Height: the spec everyone guesses

Ring height needs to clear the objective bell with a few millimeters to spare while keeping the scope as low as your cheek weld allows — lower generally means a more repeatable head position and a happier zero. The math is knowable before you buy: half the objective's outside diameter (bigger than the glass number on the box), compared against the ring's stated centerline height, plus clearance. Guessing produces either a scope resting on the barrel or a chin-weld. Thirty seconds with the spec sheet beats a return label.

Torque: tight is not a number

Ring cap and base screws have published torque specs — commonly in the range of 15–20 inch-pounds for ring caps and more for base screws, but the maker's number wins. "Good and tight" by feel routinely doubles spec, crushing scope tubes and distorting erector movement; too loose lets the scope walk under recoil, and the zero wanders with it. An inch-pound torque driver costs less than one wasted range trip and turns mounting from folklore into assembly. Add witness marks — a paint pen line across each screw head — and a loosening screw announces itself before your group does.

One-piece mounts and when they win

Separate rings are light and flexible about positioning. A one-piece cantilever mount adds rigidity, guarantees ring alignment, and pushes the scope forward for correct eye relief on flat-top rifles — which is why they dominate on carbines running LPVOs like the Strike Eagle — the Sport Cantilever is the matching value-line mount. Thread-locker belongs on base screws in small amounts (blue, never red); on ring caps, correct torque plus witness marks does the job without gluing your future scope swap shut. And "the scope lost zero" after a fall is worth checking at the mount first — screws move before erector assemblies fail.
